History A longtime social worker and Brooklyn resident, Eliza Winans Rossman founded ALLINBKLYN in 2014 because she wanted to do more. “There were organizations in my own backyard that I didn’t have the opportunity to support. And if I couldn’t access them, they couldn’t access me, either.” She wasn’t alone. She had many friends who were eager to learn about and support organizations across the borough, but their knowledge was limited. “I knew that, together, we could make a meaningful difference.” And a difference has been made. Over the past 11 years, ALLINBKLYN has grown to more than 60 members and awarded over $3M in grants to organizations working in aging, the arts, education, the environment, health and wellness, immigration, social justice, and more. |
Mission
We believe effective philanthropy extends beyond the financial to include advocacy, partnership, and sustained community engagement with the organizations we support.
We believe Brooklyn's strength lies in its diversity and our giving supports traditionally underrepresented communities and underfunded initiatives.
We believe trust-based philanthropy and democratic decision-making create more meaningful impact than top-down approaches to charitable giving.
We believe local investment matters.
We believe our grantee partners are the experts in their communities. Our role is to provide flexible support that amplifies their existing strengths and vision.
Process
Each year, our members choose two focus areas to guide our grantmaking. Members can nominate organizations within these focus areas for consideration. Through careful review, discussion, and site visits, we evaluate each organization. Our collaborative process culminates with a full membership vote in March. The organizations selected receive funding in April and we celebrate both new and returning grantee partners at our annual May breakfast. All funds are managed through Brooklyn Org (formerly the Brooklyn Community Foundation), a 501(c)(3) organization, ensuring that all donations are tax-deductible. We do not accept unsolicited applications. We welcome organizations to share more about their work by sending us a message at info@allinbklyn.org. |
